discarded to divinediscarded to divine

My final Entry to Discarded to Divine: The outfit consistence of a Faux 17th century bolero (complete with cartridge pleated sleeves) over an empire wasted dress with a charmeuse cowl bodice. Both garments are 100% wool and lined in silk. Both garment are also 60% recycled from other clothing.

Preview night at the De Young is April 15th 2011 (For people who want to see the clothes, but not bid) The Actual event, auction and fashion show is April 28, 2011. http://www.svdp-sf.org/DISCARDED/
All Proceeds from the auctions go towards clothing a feeding the homeless/transient population of San Francisco.

First off the 100% completed dress!!!

I am rather proud of the hem, I managed to make it almost entirely invisible from the outside. I am also in love with the little "Izodiea's clothes" Labels my dad got me <3

And while I was working on the last little bits of the dress I was also working on the Bolero and all it's little details. This jacket may look complicated, but thankfully it was MUCH EASIER than the dress to sew.

Shoulder pads, recycled from one of the jackets:

All the sleeve pieces were flat lined with cotton organza for a little extra pouf:

Interfacing, LOTS of interfacing!

When my teacher saw this he exclaimed how much he loved it, he also said it reminded him of TRON. Part of we wants to re-make this with those strip lights!

I decided to keep (rather than make new) the cuffs from one of the jackets.
I liked the cute little slit:

I constructed and completely finished the body and sleeves of the jacket separately except for at the bottom armhole. This photo is from right after I finished under-stitching, but had not pressed yet:

Then I spaced and pleated the sleeve tops to the body (inside and out):

After that it was easy to stitch the under sleeve and cover it with a strip of bias. I also cartridge pleated the sleeves into the cuffs, self-finishing as I went:

The Finished Result:

My teacher wanted us to make out illustrations "quick, dirty, and stylized" without loosing the sense of the intended customer (30-40's, Shops at Neiman Marcus...I can go on for anyone who is interested) After several failed attempts at Sumi ink, I went crazy just layering grey marker and my drafting pens. I also threw on some glitter nail polish, cause I like me sparkles!
I am considering getting some cheep business cards printed with the sketch on them to pass out while I am at the exhibit??

Final break down of fabric:
All of the wool parts of the jacket are from the original two coats except for the center back panel. That was too wide, so I used new fabric. The velvet strips were from a tiered skirt. The lining was a mixture of silk from the prom dress (I put the stretch silk across the back) and the new silk that was given to me. The shoulder pads, cuffs (and some of the panels of interfacing) were from the original coats. Like the dress, this puts me in the 50-60% range.

I am extremely happy with how this outfit turned out! I mean, their are a few bits that I wish had gone better, but a few bits is nothing in the grand scheme. Especially since I had no idea what I was doing when I started (That and I was the only person in my class to finish the jacket, everyone else has to work on theirs during break) So That means I have gotten very speedy! My confidence level has definitely grown as a result of this project.
After class (and our final critique) me and a few classmates went to the Dark Garden Holiday Soiree (and they tried on their first corsets !) then to a bar since all three of them where graduating.
It was a very fun and gratifying day.

My teacher is going to have all of my classes garments cleaned/pressed/photographed and turned in by the January 10th deadline. After that they will be juried for the silent auction and runway show.
I Really hope my outfit makes it into the fashion show. As a costume-designer it may be the only time I see a non-costume piece go down a runway like this.
